Senior Process Consultant

Location: Winchester, Daresbury or Humberside

Salary: Competitive

Position summary:

BPE are currently hiring a Senior Process Consultant to lead the process delivery within a project environment and execute a mixture of consultancy and design work across a number of industry sectors, but primarily within the pharmaceutical and life sciences sectors.

The role requires an experienced process engineer, capable of demonstrating a strong knowledge of process design deliverables from concept through to detailed design, and engineering expertise across a wide range of industrial applications, with particularly strong experience in the pharmaceutical and life sciences sectors.

It is anticipated that the individual is a Chartered Engineer with circa 20-25 years relevant experience, ideally within a contracting environment, with a desire to work in a technical role.

The ideal candidate will also have proven project / team leadership experience and significant experience with chemical engineering design packages (e.g. ASPEN, PEL) and an ability to lead/coach others in these areas.

Key responsibilities:

  • Technical Leadership
    • Provide Subject Matter Expertise in one or more areas, preferably within the pharmaceutical and life sciences sectors.
    • Prepare / deliver thought provoking articles and/or presentations to promote BPE as technology and thought leaders within our sectors.
    • Attend / lead special interest groups, technical forums or other engineering / technology focussed groups to keep abreast of current and future trends.
    • Lead key technical reviews including design reviews, gap assessments and Hazop studies.
    • Coach and Mentor more junior staff.
  • Project Delivery Leadership
    • Complete technical and managerial responsibility of process delivery on major BPE projects.
    • Ensure the efficient running of all aspects of the process delivery within the overall policies and objectives laid down by the company.
    • Responsible for all technical matters associated with the process design and to ensure that the process designs conform with mandatory standards, local legislation and client/project requirements
  • Project Delivery
    • Lead a project design team and be able to coach and mentor more junior engineers.
    • Liaise with Clients, Project Managers and other disciplines to ensure the smooth running of the process aspects of projects.  This includes the provision of adequate information for planning, cost control and equipment costing.
    • Generate / check / approve process design models, documents, drawings and reports.
    • Ensure that the process design and subsequent detailed engineering do not jeopardise the plant safety or performance.
    • Advise Project Managers of all technical risks inherent in a plant design and assist in the evaluation of these risks through to successful conclusion.
  • Continuous Improvement
    • Assist in establishing operating policies and objectives directed towards ensuring profitable operations, growth of business and the enhancement of the process team’s competence and performance.
    • Identify those procedures, practices and standards required by the process team to efficiently carry out its work, and co-ordinate preparation of such.
    • Identify areas of process development which are likely to benefit the company.
  • Business Development
    • Support the Business Development team on sales visits, conference calls and / or client meetings.
    • Lead / support the production of compelling and competitive proposals.
    • Generate / check / approve scope of work write-ups and manhour estimates to comply with tender requirements.

Other Requirements:

  • Chemical Engineering degree recognised by the IChemE or equivalent.
  • A working knowledge of process safety related regulations and methodologies.
  • Hands on operating experience through a commissioning or similar role.
  • An ability to communicate via both verbal and written means to peers and to people outside of the company.
  • A demonstrated aptitude for developing further competency in Process Engineering expertise and leadership. (In terms of Experience, Sectors and Project Life Cycle).
  • Legally permitted to live and work in the UK.
  • UK Driving Licence.

Senior Electrical, Control & Instrumentation (E,C&I) Engineer

Location: Winchester

Position summary:

BPE’s Electrical, Control and Instrumentation (E,C &I) design team are looking for an experienced engineer to join the team in a full time permanent staff position of Senior E,C&I Engineer, to help meet ongoing project objectives.

The Senior E,C&I Engineer shall ideally have knowledge and experience, which brings a high degree of competence, in the following areas:

  • Instrument and actuated valve technologies.
  • Instrument loop design.
  • Analytical and weighing instrumentation.
  • Industrial automation and industrial system communications.
  • Control and Safety System architectures.
  • Process Control technique.
  • Design of LV electrical circuits including motor controls, LV distribution, lighting and earthing and compliance to BS 7671.
  • Electrical requirements in Hazardous Areas, where a risk of explosion from dusts and gases exist, in particular the implementation of Intrinsically Safe circuits.
  • Use of Amtech Electrical Design software.
  • Use of Microsoft Office applications.
  • MCC design.
  • Lightning Protection.
  • GAMP V standards and guidance.
  • Functional Safety IEC 61508/11 and Machinery Safety IEC 60204.

(please note however, consideration will be made where an engineer, biased towards one discipline, can demonstrate transferrable skills and willingness to develop new competencies.)

The Senior E,C&I Engineer shall be a central part of the E,C&I team, reporting to the E,C&I Design Manager. The Senior E,C&I Engineer shall take a discipline lead role in individual projects (Concept to Detailed Design), supervise contract members of the team and may provide on-site support to clients.

Main duties are:

  • Conduct site surveys and liaise with the client, throughout projects, to develop the process electrical and instrument design.
  • Attend internal and external project meetings.
  • Assist in the coordination of the project design, alongside Process, Piping, Building Services and CSA Designers and Engineers, through 3D model review.
  • Engineer General Arrangement Drawings, Layout Drawings, Cable Route Drawings, Location Drawings, Block Cable Diagrams, Single Line Diagrams, Circuit Diagrams, Wiring Diagrams and Instrument Loop Diagrams.
  • Engineer Instrument and I/O Lists, Instrument and Electrical Cable Schedules (including cable sizing calculations), MTO/BOMs.
  • Produce instrument datasheets.
  • Produce Requirement Specifications and Scopes of Work
  • Provide Technical input into Invitation to Tender Packages
  • Peer check colleagues design documentation.

The Senior E,C&I Engineer shall be familiar with the use of British and International Standards, Industry Regulations, EC Directives and Health & Safety Regulations, including CDM Regulations.

Trainee Electrical, Control & Instrumentation (E,C&I) Engineer

Position summary:

BPE’s Electrical, Control and Instrumentation design team are looking for an E,C&I Engineer to join the team in a full time permanent staff position to help meet ongoing project objectives, with the potential for further progression to develop your career into a more senior role, increasing your level of competence within E,C&I.

This position is being offered as a trainee / development role to an E,C&I Engineer who has already gained qualifications and experience working within an electrical, control or instrumentation role and is looking to progress their career further.

The Trainee E,C&I Engineer shall ideally have knowledge and experience, within some of the areas below, but are also willing to develop these further for this position.  Applicants that are biased to one discipline will also be considered.

Mechanical & Piping Designer

Location: Winchester

Position summary:

BPE are currently hiring a Mechanical & Piping Designer to work with our Piping Group Manager for our Winchester office to help with a mixture of site and design work within the Pharmaceutical & Chemical industries.

Key responsibilities:

  • Conversant in materials of construction, functions and impact of stress analysis, insulation, installed instruments commonly used.
  • Thorough understanding of common equipment and capable of routing all major process and utility piping in accordance with P&IDs and project standards, including the impact of specific service conditions on piping design.
  • Experienced in more complex piping systems such as lined and jacketed pipe and impact of material supply and fabrication on piping design.
  • Ensuring that conventional HS&E protection requirements are embodied in the designs.
  • Takes a hands-on and lead role with responsibility for all piping design and layout in an assigned area including;
      • Setting piping layout concepts
      • Assuring quality and consistency and ensuring that safety is built in
      • Operational compliance
      • Maintenance and construction requirements are incorporated
      • Support a cost focussed approach to plant layout and piping design such that installed and operational costs are minimised
  • To coach less experienced individuals and also to agree work assignments with the Piping Group Manager

Skills & experience required:

  • Suitable Professional Qualification
  • Relevant Piping Design Engineering experience in the Pharmaceutical industry

Piping Designer (Contract)

Location: Winchester

Position summary:

BPE are currently hiring a Piping Designer for our Winchester office to help with a mixture of site and design work within the Pharmaceutical & Chemical industries. This is a contract position.

Key responsibilities

Thorough understanding of common equipment and capable of routing all major process and utility piping in accordance with P&IDs and project standards, including the impact of specific service conditions on piping design.

Experienced in more complex piping systems such as lined and jacketed pipe and impact of material supply and fabrication on piping design.

Good time management skills with the ability to manage sections of design and work within a collaborative team environment.

Take a pro-active approach to working with other disciplines such as process and E,C&I in order to;

  • Set piping layout concepts
  • Deliver safety, quality and consistency within designs
  • Ensure operational, maintenance and construction requirements are incorporated
  • Support a cost focussed approach to plant layout and piping design such that install and operational costs are minimised

Skills & experience required

Undergraduate Industrial Placements

BPE are keen to support undergraduate Chemical Engineers and run a Summer Placement programme offering a 2nd or 3rd year Chemical Engineering Undergraduate eight weeks work experience during July and August. Based at our Colden Common office, the placement typically includes some CAD, process modelling and HAZOP scribe experience, and site and sales visits where possible although the nature of the work very much depends on our project and client portfolio at the time.
