Five minutes with Simon Wheeler

Simon Wheeler is BPE’s business development director and also sits on the board. As part of our new ‘five minutes with’ feature, in which we get to know members of the team a little better, we talk to Simon about what inspired him to start a career in chemical engineering and some of his BPE highlights…

Q: What piece of technology has changed the way you work the most?

My iPhone

Q: What did you want to be when you were a child?

I wanted to be a professional golfer, missed the mark by some distance!

Q: How did you get into process engineering?

I attended an introductory weekend to chemical engineering at The University of Birmingham whilst at school and subsequently decided to study it at Birmingham

Q: What do you think we can do to encourage more young people to get into engineering?

Provide more supported opportunities like the one I was lucky enough to have at school to explore and understand what’s on offer to our future engineers.

Q: What’s the biggest challenge you’ve had to help a client overcome and what was the solution?

Helping to identify a new technology platform for one of our clients to align with a significant step change in their sustainability values and commitments.

Q: Who inspires you?

People who rise to a challenge.

Q: What do you listen to in the car on the way to and from work?

Sport and if there’s nothing on, music on my iPhone.

Q: Where do you go to find out about latest innovations in engineering?

My role with BPE means that I attend a number of seminars and conferences run by organisations such as The Institution of Chemical Engineers, these help me to keep up to date with new thinking and technologies.

Q: What’s been your most memorable moment to date at BPE?

Joining the Board of BPE in 2015.
