As part of our series of interviews celebrating Women in Engineering Day (June 23) we talk to BPE senior consultant Rebecca David about her experiences in the industry. Here, she tells us why she love...
Process Development, Industrialisation and Scale Up
Taking a process or product from the bench to a viable production scale is a complex multi-disciplinary task with often critical consequences for you as the process owner. BPE has helped clients in a variety of sectors by providing (bio)chemical engineering expertise into their teams and delivering a framework for scale-up, including the design and implementation of pilot plants.
Our approach is very much about integrating as far as possible with your team in order to understand your scientific, commercial, quality and regulatory requirements. From a technical standpoint, we breakdown the process into recognisable Chemical Engineering Unit Operations and analyse these to develop a scale-up strategy. We use a technical risk management approach to identify laboratory, pilot and design tasks and work through these towards a process suitable for implementation. BPE not only provides consultancy and design but can devise and run pilot trials, manage equipment suppliers and manage analytical services.
As well as new product introduction, BPE have considerable expertise in the scale-up of existing production facilities to meet new target output levels, whilst maintaining product quality and plant efficiencies. We have an excellent background in working to appropriate guidelines, legislation and regulations – cGMP etc.
Key principles and targets that we work to include:-
- Meeting Safety Requirements
- Process/Plant Efficiency
- Project timelines
- High availability/reliability
- Optimised Return on Investment (ROI)
